Snow and icy conditions cause delay to collections

Thursday 11th February saw the majority of the South East covered in snow and ice, which lead to collections in Rother being suspended. Today the collection crews have started their rounds late due to the treacherous weather conditions on most residential roads and pavements.

We ask if residents can keep their wheelie bins and boxes out at the normal collection point, as crews will be catching up yesterdays work today, tomorrow and into next week if need be.

Thank you for bearing with us during this difficult operational period. We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but we are sure you will understand the reasons for this. please refer to Rother District Council’s website for the lastest information on refuse and recycling collectios http://www.rother.gov.uk/

The carbon footprint of your waste

A typical resident of Melton cuts 4% off their domestic carbon footprint by recycling. A dedicated green resident who recycles and composts everything possible could achieve a saving of over 9%, and this can be reduced even further by cutting down on the items and packaging we consume.

Across Melton Borough we are already saving almost 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year by recycling and composting rather than landfilling all our waste, and this saving could be almost doubled.

Of course Verdant has a role to play as the company that collects your waste. We are continually looking at the ways we work and using the latest technologies to lower the impact we are having. Watch this space for more news on the progress we’re making, and carry on recycling.

Garden Waste collections return.

Today (1st Feb) sees garden waste collections reinstated for residents of Rother. Thank-you for bearing with us and understanding the need to cancel the garden waste collections through the bad weather conditions experienced in January. If you wish to check your collection day/ schedule please refer to Rother District Council’s website. http://www.webapps1.rother.gov.uk/cleanseonline/EnquireAbout.aspx

Eco Products

There are now many electrical products on the market that reduce the impact on the environment. Take a look at the recycle now website http://www.recyclenow.com/
Eco products are sustainable products which use ways to reduce their environmental impact. Several ways of doing this are:

  • use recycled materials - like plastics and metal
  • reduce the energy they use
  • adjust the energy they use to suit different tasks
  • reduce the size, weight or packaging i.e. less materials used
  • be made to last longer
  • be repaired easily
  • generate their own energy i.e. solar  power or wind-up
  • contain less harmful chemicals
  • be taken apart easily for recycling

I’m particular impressed with the mobile phone which has a solar pannel to charge the phone and the casing is made from recycled plastic bottles, it also has a built in pedometer which calculates how much C02 emissions have been reduced by walking instead of taking the car.
